OLIKA Förlag, founded in 2007, is an award-winning Swedish Publishing House that produces high quality children’s books. The word OLIKA means different in Swedish and OLIKA’s books reflect the diversity of modern society in terms of gender and ethnicity, (dis)abilities and family forms and offer more children the possibility to find identification. In 2012, OLIKA was awarded the Swedish Equality Award and the Stenbeck Scholarship for their efforts to promote equality and diversity in children’s literature. In 2013, Courage with Wilma and Loppan was chosen as Outstanding Book by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People). Their most famous title, however, is Kivi & Monster Dog. Published in 2012, it was the first Swedish children’s book using the gender neutral pronoun hen. The book made headlines nationally and internationally and went on to be discussed in Swedish media for months. As a result, the word hen made its way into the Swedish vocabulary – a major equality breakthrough!
